Traditional Black Forest Cake
This is a traditional black forest cake. There are three layers of dark chocolate cake, cherry coulis, cherries, and whipped cream. I topped it off with some brandied cherries, and milk chocolate shavings, and dark chocolate shavings.

Your cake is beautiful. When ever we travel to Germany, if I see it on a menu…I order it.

Thank you! Yeah unless I make it, or get it in a German bakery it is never the true thing. It seems they try and it is close but its never the same.

What’s not the same about it? Is it what they include, or a technique, or something else?

A lot of times its the preparation of the cakes, and the ingredients. Quality ingredients will make a huge difference. I find in America there are a lot of corner cutting, even at the place I work. It still tastes good, but it might be not as good as the original. I make it a point of where ever I travel to try the delicacy there. It possibly will not be the same anywhere else. Take the belgium waffle. I have never had it any better thane when I was in Belgium. =)

Having lived in Germany for 6 years, I might have to take you up on a taste challenge. 😉
But you are absolutely right, It’s rare when you can find something that absolutely mimics what you had at the source of origin. Having also lived in Brussels for 3 years, I have never ever found a Belgian waffle that tastes the same. Did you also know that there are different types of Belgian waffle? Makes it even harder. 🙂
